Screening of Ocean brings coastal conservation into focus
The Galle screening of ‘Ocean’ marked a key moment in LEF’s wider efforts to spark conversation around marine protection in Sri Lanka, using storytelling to inform, engage and inspire action.
The Lanka Environment Fund (LEF) hosted a screening of Ocean, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, in Galle as part of its ongoing marine conservation outreach. The evening brought together stakeholders from Sri Lanka’s southern coastal region, from hospitality leaders to conservation experts, to spotlight the urgent need to protect the island’s marine ecosystems.
Among those invited were local schoolchildren, including students from the Ceylon English Academy (CEA), whose presence reflects a shared commitment to education and youth engagement in the fight for biodiversity.
Following the screening, a panel discussion explored the key threats to Sri Lanka’s coastal waters, including overfishing, habitat loss and unsustainable tourism. The conversation featured Nishan Perera (Blue Resources), Liz Norris (Club Ceylon), and was moderated by Vinod Malwatte (LEF).
This event is part of LEF’s continued efforts to foster informed, cross-sector dialogue on marine conservation, ensuring that coastal protection remains a priority not just for policy, but for communities across the island.
