Sri Lanka’s first Responsible Seafood Guide launches in Galle
A new national guide to buying seafood responsibly has launched in Sri Lanka, translating expert knowledge into everyday action to help protect marine life and support the future of local fisheries.
The Lanka Environment Fund (LEF) has launched A Practical Guide to Purchasing Responsible Seafood in Sri Lanka, the first publication of its kind in the country.
Created to support more sustainable decision-making across the seafood supply chain, the guide offers a clear, four-step framework that brings together culinary expertise and marine conservation science. It is designed to help people make better choices, ask better questions, and reduce pressure on overfished species.
The project was developed in collaboration with Liz Norris, Executive Seafood Chef at Club Ceylon, and written by Mehak Sangani, Marine Programmes Manager at the Lanka Environment Fund. It features illustrations by Shantha Jayaweera and design by Danushri Weikala, and was edited by Vinod Malwatte, LEF’s Executive Director, and Hafsa Jamel, Programmes Director.
The guide was launched at Tallentire House in Galle, where stakeholders from the conservation, culinary and hospitality sectors came together to mark its release. Hosted in partnership with Club Ceylon and supported by the DHD Foundation, the evening helped build visibility and collective support for more sustainable seafood practices in Sri Lanka.
The guide is freely available via the LEF website and can also be accessed directly here (PDF). Printed copies are available at Club Ceylon, with all proceeds reinvested into the continued development of this important tool. Sinhala and Tamil versions are in progress.
This guide represents a practical step forward, empowering consumers and professionals alike to help protect Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems, one purchase at a time.
